Art, Photography, & Expression.

Picture
We believe that art allows us to express our emotions, better understand ourselves, and spend time focusing & relaxing. We love to see our members unleash their creativity, have fun, and learn alongside friends! We host weekly art classes on Instagram Live, and we’ve created opportunities for our members to contribute to a Brave House mural on the Lower East Side (located at 38 Rivington Street).

In the Heights Musical.

November 20, 2022

We visited Columbia University to see students perform the musical "In the Heights". We had a wonderful time visiting a new place and throughly enjoyed the performance.

Jewelry Making Workshop.

November 16, 2022

We gathered at John Jay College to host a Jewelry Making Workshop. We created beautiful bracelets with Colombian tagua stones and had a great time being creative, making new friends, and learning about tagua stones.

Special thanks to the Immigrant Student Success Center at John Jay and Mixteca Org for co-hosting this event with us; and to The Tagua Tagua for facilitating.

Art Therapy at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

September 29, 2022

We gathered for an afternoon of art therapy at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. We started with our Brave Oath, some community connection, and delicious pizza, and then we dove into exploring our past, present and future through our creative expression of art. Everyone left with a little self-care goodie to carry them through the beginning of the school year and the start of a new season.

Notes on Self-Love.

December 12, 2020

This outdoor art class featured self-love notes. We gathered on the water at the Brooklyn Bridge and wrote messages (on cards and leaves) to spread to people in the community. Thank you Sami Giarratani for leading such a fun and beautiful workshop and to all the Brave Sisters who came by!

Poetry Open Mic Night.

November 23, 2020

On November 23rd, we hosted a virtual night of poetry, advocacy, and celebration! We featured performances from our members, an update from our founder, and a piece from a surprise Broadway guest.

100% of the proceeds went directly to funding our continued Covid-19 Relief Response, which includes providing food & cash assistance, housing counseling, and mental health support.

Capturing Joy.

February 26, 2020

This photography class allowed us to set up creative shots and experiment with photoshop, all while grooving to French African beats! Thank you Stephen Elliot for sharing his talent, time & imagination with us.

Who is Your Superhero? Art Class.

January 7, 2020

We made collages surrounding the question: who is your superhero? We asked ourselves: what is our superpower, and how can we all embody that everyday? Thank you Sami Giarratani for leading us in play and creativity, and to Tenzin Seldon for joining us for a night of exploration and connection.

Essential Oil Mantras Art Class.

November 26, 2019

Sami Giarratani taught us how to transfer images using essential oils and create messages of love, resistance and power. “Walls turned sideways are bridges.” – Angela Davis

Glamour Magazine Writing Workshop with Samantha Leach.

November 6, 2019

We spent the evening with Glamour Magazine journalist, Samantha Leach. We talked about writing, asking good questions, and elevating women’s stories. It was a night full of learning, laughing, and great advice!

Art Therapy: Coloring.

October 21, 2019

Thank you Juanita for leading us in a soothing, peaceful evening of art therapy. We were all able to express our thoughts, feelings, and emotions through coloring.

Photography Workshop.

October 9, 2019

Our high-energy, high-fiving photography teacher Stephen demonstrated unique photography techniques and lent us his equipment to practice our photography skills. The photos were packed with magic and our members learned invaluable photography lessons.

Lit Women.

October 8, 2019

In this art class, we collaged candles using pictures of inspirational women & words/images that light us up. Thank you, Samantha G, for leading us through this reflective exercise and helping spark our creativity.

Collaging.

September 10, 2019

Art class led by our talented teacher Samantha G allowed us to explore therapeutic collaging. We put a name to the stressors in our life and then tore them up into tiny pieces, using them as materials for beautiful collages. Our art classes are designed to help our members share and release our emotions through creativity.

Built with ❤ in Brooklyn.

Say hello.
