in-house-Trauma-informed Care Trainings were offered to mentors as part of their on-boarding, covering topics from cultural sensitivity, to suicide awareness, to ideas and activities for connecting with mentees. special Mentor Trainings were offered to all active mentors, one on Advanced Mental Health crises and another on LGBTQ+ affirming practices. " I, like a butterfly, flew from one place to another. I was lost, until I met other wonderful people like me, who helped me fly again."

The Brave Buddies Mentorship Program was created to make an enriching, lasting impact on the lives of our members. We seek to provide them with positive role models and create space for them to dream big about their futures. These relationships can make all the difference in the world to women and gender-expansive youth in our community.

The Mentor Experience. |
Mentor Responsibilities
- Minimum one-year commitment to join this program
- Meet up with mentee in-person at least once a month (we recommend 2+ hours each time)
- Check-in with mentee at least twice a month (e.g. calling, texting, etc.)
- Complete the mentor monthly check-in form
Additional Support Structures
- Mentor Coordinator: The mentor coordinator is there to help support your buddy relationship by offering advice, problem-solving, and additional resources, etc.
About our Mentors. |
- Our Mentors are women above the age of 25 and of diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, gender identities, and sexual orientations.
- Our Mentors are working across all types of professional fields in New York City (primarily health, tech, educational, and social work related fields).
Application Process Timeline. |
- Submit online volunteer mentorship application here
- Attend a Brave Buddies information session (typically offered once every two months)
- Interview with Brave House Team
- Complete background check (if accepted as a Mentor)
- Complete trauma informed care training session (1 hour, conducted virtually)
- Enter waiting pool of mentors
- Get matched with a member
