Our goal.
Launched in spring 2022, our New and Expecting Moms Initiative supports new moms with crucial resources including public benefits enrollment, in-kind donations, and therapy for postpartum depression. As of January 2023, we have hosted four baby showers, distributed over $12,000 in housing assistance, created a peer group for community and support; and provided new moms with goods such as formula and cribs.
Our New and Expecting Moms Program also provides young immigrant women with vital social-emotional support. In one case, a Brave House team member accompanied a member while she gave birth, as she had no family members present in this country. Our team also helps members identify and enroll in childcare options so they can work.

Our why.
Our New and Expecting Moms program epitomizes our vision at the Brave House. It demonstrates our approach of immediate support, long-lasting impact, community-led advocacy, and our All Are Welcome ethos.
Immigrant mothers face significant barriers and oppression, especially when enrolling in benefits due to language barriers, technological inaccessibility, lack of information, and immigration status. We want to continue to support them with community, communication, accompanying members to enrollment offices, and assisting them on a path to a beautiful life full of opportunity for themselves and their children. When new moms have more secure finances, stable housing, and mental health support, it empowers them to focus on the growth and development of their young children and themselves. |
Our impact. |
Since launching in spring 2022, our New and Expecting Moms Assistance (NEMA) program has beautifully flourished, and we could not be prouder! Here are 4 quick facts about NEMA the Brave House team is grateful for.
1. NEMA supported 24 new moms this year with benefits enrollment, resources, neighborhood visits, and donations. 2. NEMA provided over $18,000 in cash assistance distribution. 3. 18 of our New Moms enrolled in WIC. 4. NEMA mothers received $700+ in donations of diapers, breast pumps, formula, and baby clothes. Our Brave House app has an entire section dedicated to Pregnancy and Motherhood, so members can easily find transitional housing, low-cost resources, free grocery delivery for moms, free clinics, and community. |
